About the Resort

Monument Lake is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on Highway 12, 37 miles west of Trinidad.

This high-altitude lake is owned by the City of Trinidad and leased to Monument Lake Resort, LLC . In 1937, the WPA built the resort which still is in operation. The lake's name came from a rock formation that once stood in its center, 15 feet above water. The formation was said to represent two Indian Chiefs.

Monument Lake is a favorite among local fishermen. The lake is stocked with brown and rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and splake.

The Monument Lake complex originally included a fish hatchery and a zoo. Though now unused, these structures, charming examples of the WPA at its best, can be seen below the dam east of the Lake.

The resort includes a 20-room lodge hotel, 13 stand alone cabins, Full and Partial Service RV and tent sites, a bath house, a bar, a restaurant, a marina, and a convenience store.

Our 20-room lodge hotel includes a fireplace, a patio, patio table and chairs, and private bath.

Whether you're looking for a vacation with friends or a place to bring the family, the lodge rooms at Monument Lake Resort have the accommodations for you.

Our adobe-style cabins are fully equipped to make your stay memorable and comfortable. Each cabin is its own cozy, private retreat from everyday cares and concerns allowing time to come together, be together and play together.
